Barnyard Cat

The long-awaited Barnyard Cat is finally here. This cat is intended to go with her friends: Barnyard Rooster, Barnyard Dog and Barnyard Donkey. Together they make up the composition for the Bremen Town Musicians.  I have created several kitties, however none of them seemed to fit the mold. Until I made this one based on my own little (actually very big) black and white fluffy cat. Below all the friends meet at last:

Spotted Owl Overlooks

I'm excited to welcome myself back to the pen and ink technique. After a not-so-recent accident from a quill-pen I have been reluctant to "pick up the pen" so to speak.  I'm back -- and wish to introduce this new piece -- Spotted Owl Overlooks.

Barnyard Donkey

This little paper collage donkey is made to go with the rooster and dog as a set. Please see the Barnyard Dog post for more explanation. I tried three times to make a cat that looked decent with no luck.

Barnyard Dog

This paper collage Barnyard Dog is made in the same style as Barnyard Rooster. A lot of dog-lovers viewing my blog saw Patchwork Kitty and wanted a dog to be showcased. Everyone is not a cat-lover after all or a bird-lover. So for all you dog-lovers, this one is for you. 

My mom gave me the idea of doing a series of four paper collage animals representing the Bremen Town Musicians, the folktale by the Brothers Grimm. I'm running with the idea so please stay turned for a cat and a donkey next. Below you can see the rooster and the dog together.

Blue-footed Booby on Buttonhole Sea

Today I was practicing making buttonholes with my sewing machine. I really enjoyed the way the little patch was looking with the contrasting shades and with the bright blue string. Suddenly it came to me that the blue in the buttonholes would bring out the blue in the Booby's feet. Thus, this image now has the added element of collage. The square and circular shapes also contrast nicely on the bottom of the page, I think.

Note: I just changed the name of this painting. It started with the brilliant idea of my friend, Ariel, to include the word "buttonholes." Great idea Ariel!

Paper Bird

The shape of the bird is formed through the shapes on the paper. Both interact with each other.

Fancy Owl

This pretty owl is based on a design I had designed for a greeting card. Painting and collage work hand and hand here, or should I say "wing" and "tail." I like how the shapes on the paper and the painting interact with each other--a happy chance!

Barnyard Rooster

Okay . . . okay, I know this isn’t really a painting in the traditional sense of the word. However, this is where “thinking outside of the box” took me, to literally break out of the box with a pair of scissors and paper. I have been wanting to explore paper-collage for a long time now. I think it will connect nicely with the work I have been doing for my cut-paper greeting cards seen on my company website, Baby Bird Designs.  Check it out:  babybirddesigns.com
